APE and Networking 101

The Alternative Press Expo, or APE as it’s affectionately referred to, is just over a month away and I can finally announce that I will have some real estate there selling my wares and taking commissions alongside my good pal and fellow cartoonist Bridgett Spicer of Squid Row fame. It’s one of my favorite conventions as it really is still all about the creators without any of the Hollywood interference of some of it’s bigger convention counterparts. I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to conduct workshops at the show for the past couple of years and I thought it’d be fun to do a little something different on the blog today and share the outline/info I distributed during my workshop on networking last year.

If anyone is interested I’d be happy to elaborate on the outline as I did during the workshop as well as start a series of posts about what it takes/my road to become a cartoonist. Please feel free to email me (via the email on my contact page) or comment on this post. Without further ado, here is Networking 101 as presented by me at APE 2012:

So how do you break into the comic business? John Ostrander (The Kents, Spectre, Martian Manhunter, Hawkworld, Suicide Squad, Deadshot, Blaze of Glory, creator of Grimjack) says, “Usually our answer is ‘with a crowbar through the skylight in the dead of night.”

“There is no one way that works for any two people.”

This is true. However, no matter how you break in there is one aspect which is consistent in every creator’s story about their ascent to comic stardom: Networking.

Introduction:

  • Most important piece of networking is…YOU! Your work, professionalism, etc. creates the desire and/or demand to work with you.
  • Find your style. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but it won’t get you anywhere in the cartooning/comics industry.
  • Take time to build up a portfolio. Make sure your portfolio includes different genres, people, places things, etc. Variety is a HUGE aspect in separating a good portfolio from a great one.
  • Very important in this day and age: Establish a web presence! No one can hire you if they can’t find you or your work. There are plenty of (free/cheap) channels to assist you including, but not limited to:
  1. WordPress
  2. Blogger
  3. Deviant Art

Collaborators:

  • For those who are artists or writers looking to partner with someone of like mind on a project and/or pitch.
  • Many avenues of finding collaborators:
  1. Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites/)
  2. Digital Webbing (http://www.digitalwebbing.com/talent/)
  3. Community involvement (i.e. Cartoon Art Museum; National Cartoonist Society)
  4. Comic Shop boards, etc.
  • Not all styles fit together. Make sure to find a collaborator who brings out the best in your work and vice versa.
  • Open and honest communication. No working relationship will succeed if personal cannot be separated from the professional.
  • Cross promote. Each collaborator should have online presence. Use them!
  • Create collaboration fan page:
  1. Facebook
  2. Website, etc.

Editors & Publishers:

  • First and foremost: Do not, I repeat, do NOT cold call, submit unsolicited material (unless otherwise stated) to or try to dupe an editor. As stated in the Image Comics submission guidelines: “DO NOT try to pull a fast one! Don’t think that you can get away with saying that you had a book approved at a convention or that a previous publisher gave your book the go ahead. If your book is not up to snuff, you’re just making yourself look unprofessional.”
  • Conventions! Conventions! Conventions!
  • Promote yourself. Print business cards (postcards, ash cans, etc. if applicable) to exchange with editors/publishers whom you engage at conventions/trade shows/holiday parties, etc.
  • Only show your latest and greatest. Showing works-in-progress, half done or old samples only screams amateur and will do nothing but set you back.
  • Do not take critiques personally. Be polite, take constructive criticism and do not defend your work. Editors are not being mean, they are sincerely trying to help. Heed their advice. *Keep in mind this is a very subjective business and a thousand “no’s” doesn’t mean you won’t ever find one “yes”.
  • Table at a convention. Buy a small press or artist’s alley table when there is product to show/sell. This shows initiative, intent and the fact that you can produce a product.
  • Conventions are also a great way to meet potential collaborators! Most conventions these days, including APE, have comic creator connections. Take advantage!
  • Attend/volunteer (get involved!) gallery openings and industry attended parties for such reputable Bay Area establishments such as the Cartoon Art Museum. *As this workshop was conducted at APE I focused on the Bay Area but this is applicable anywhere.
  • Keep track of your contacts. Business cards should be kept safe and organized during and after the convention.

Perseverance! If you want to work in the comics field then do not give up. You will be rejected. A lot. It’s a part of this game. The ones who end up doing this professionally are the ones who use that rejection as inspiration rather than discouragement.

Scott Rosema (Space Ghost, August, X-Men Adventures, Tiny Toons, etc.) agrees. “I did a lot of submitting. I had a really tenacious attitude of constantly submitting, regardless of the rejections.”

“What’s important is the ability to work your way past the rejection letters and just resubmit.”

Create what you want to create, not what you think people want you to create. The main piece of advice I can leave you with is do this because you love it. If you’re only looking to get rich or have a stable occupation you’re better off becoming an accountant. That said you can make a living doing what you love.

Good luck!!

Comic Con 2013 Recap

Happy Monday y’all!

I just returned from a crazy and ridiculously fast trip to the San Diego Comic Con. I hadn’t been since 2008 and was stunned by just how much the show and attendees have changed. The sheer volume of people that attend Comic Con is staggering! Over 120,000 folks of all shapes, sizes, colors, planets, etc. flooded the San Diego Convention Center and spilled out into the surrounding areas including the tents just outside the hall (which are now designated for lining up for panels/signings) and the streets of the Gaslamp District.

We arrived in San Diego on Friday a little after 10 in the morning and after a quick shower/change I headed out to the convention center to pick up my badge and meet up with my agent pal Will for lunch. We had a great time, and a few drinks, and then I headed back to brave the crowds of the convention. The drinks helped some with that. I checked out the floor for a bit and then went off to my first signing of the show at the Arcana Studio booth for The Unemployment Adventures of Aqualung. I signed alongside the very talented Scott Kinney which was a lot of fun. Here’s a hilarious pic/tweet from the awesome Cory Edwards:

That night my good pal Lex Fajardo and I decided to check out the Eisner Awards. It was the first time either of us had done so despite many years of attending the con and I feel it’s safe to say we both enjoyed the festivities. We saw some friends and colleagues win awards and even got to see Captain Adama himself, Edward James Olmos, present one of the awards. Only at Comic Con…

Saturday was a double whammy as I had 2 appearances to attend: The Cartoon Art Museums annual Sketch-A-Thon and a second signing at the Arcana booth. The Cartoon Art Museums sketch-a-thon has been a blast every year I’ve participated and this year was absolutely no exception as I was joined by the incredible talents of Debbie Huey and Eric Shanower! I was asked to draw my version of a Punisher-style skull, a Robbie Racer for one mans sons birthday (Happy Birthday Oliver!) and decided to doodle this fella too:

Bat Opus

After the Sketch-A-Thon I raced over to my 2nd and final signing for The Unemployment Adventures of Aqualung. This time around I signed alongside the very cool, fellow rockabilly enthusiast Dave Parkin. We had some fun and lively conversation and, as mutual admirers of each others work, you may even be seeing a collaborative project or two from us in the future. It was during this signing that every last copy of Aqualung that the publisher had brought was sold! I was amazed and delighted by the reception and interest in the book. Here I am signing one of the last copies for a “fan”:

Alex_signing_2

All in all I had such a fantastic time with my industry buddies (both old and new), our good friend Jen who was a lovely and gracious host and my wonderful fiancé who makes me feel as though anything and everything is possible. I came home with little sleep and several new contacts and possibilities for new work. The rest of 2013 and next year should be a very exciting time!

Keep on truckin’!

San Diego schedule

We are just about a week away from the craziness that is San Diego Comic Con and I will be down there for the first time since 2008. I’m excited to be returning in a professional capacity but I’m also a bit wary of crowds so we’ll see if I can keep it together.

Anyway, I’ll be signing and sketching at a couple different booths on Friday and Saturday and I’m passing along the schedule I’ve been given thus far (If there are any changes I’ll post them here):

Friday:

Arcana (booth 2415) 5:30-7

Saturday:

Cartoon Art Museum (booth 1930) 1-2 with the awesome Debbie Huey

Arcana (booth 2415) 2-3

Hope to see some of you there!

June rundown madness!

Wow, folks it has been a helluva couple months! Here’s a recap/update on what’s been happening:

The Unemployment Adventures of Aqualung was released by Arcana and will very shortly appear in the July issue of Previews (code JUL130783 if you’re a vendor looking to purchase the book or fan looking to order from your local shop)! There will be a signing at this years San Diego Comic Con and I will post more info here as it is available.

– I completed a 22 page one-shot bio-comic for Bluewater Productions which I still have to keep under wraps until it’s released but here is another page preview:

Page_22_web– Work continues on the absolutely awesome creator-owned book from my good buddy and insanely talented writer CW Cooke (cover and Page 1 below):

– Writer extraordinaire, and buddy of mine, Adam Wilson and I continue to search for a home for the whacky adventures of Benjamin and the Mr. Fish. We may be searching outside of the direct market to place these collected volumes of adventurous tales, short stories and games…

– Work also continues on the extremely fun alien battle comic DMWT for I’m a Geek Entertainment (images coming soon…)!

– Last but not least there are some HUGE things in the works for me involving the animation biz, however I must remain tight lipped on that for now. Hopefully I’ll be able to share some awesomeness with y’all in the next few months! Hope everyone is having an incredible summer so far!

Big WOW! and May Project updates

This past weekend I attended the Big WOW! (formerly Super-con) convention in San Jose and though I was only there briefly it really recharged my creative batteries. Conventions always have a way of inspiring and motivating me and Big WOW! was no exception. Seeing all the amazing work of the exhibiting creators, including friends and colleagues of mine, was exciting and I was amazed at how much the convention has grown since just last year. In fact, I’m thinking of getting a table myself in 2014 but more on that later…

One of the reasons I spent a short amount of time at the convention was due to my workload. One of the projects I’m currently working on is a bio-comic for Bluewater Productions and while I cannot discuss who or what the one-shot is about I would like to share this page of art which I am certain will divulge nothing about the story.

Page 5_trim_webI am also still hard at work with my partner-in-crime and writer extraordinaire C.W. Cooke on our forthcoming creator owned project. We are keeping fairly tight lipped on the premise, storyline, etc. but I thought just for shits and giggles I’d share this teaser image cropped from one of the books pages.

And finally I wanted to share something which I found to be very cool: Fan art for Aqualung! That’s correct folks, “The Unemployed Adventures of Aqualung” is a bona fide hit…with at least this young man anyway. To be honest, having one person think enough of my work to emulate it makes it a success in my book. Enjoy, I know I did!

Free Comic Book Day 2013 (and my books for sale)

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day or as my buddy C.W. calls it, “First Christmas”. “What is FCBD?” you might ask. Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May each year – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. Check with your local comic book shop for their participation and rules. It’s a fun filled day for those who already love this medium and a great way to introduce others to the world of comics. Be sure to go out tomorrow and support your local comic book shop! For more information and to find a shop near you visit http://www.freecomicbookday.com/.

I also can now announce a couple of my titles available through Arcana Studios and Viper Comics, respectively. First up is my 88 page Graphic Novel “The Unemployment Adventures of Aqualung”. From the website: “For over seventy-five years, Agent Aqualung has defended the country from supernatural forces as part of the 88, a covert branch of the Department of Defense. A pink slip and a sealed letter sends shock waves through the covert initiative — they are being permanently dismantled due to budget cuts… Aqualung must navigate through unemployment, dating, oh, and evil plots from ancient gods and their flunkies. The real question is, can he stop them before his unemployment benefits run out?” If you’re a fan of comically twisted tales of the supernatural then this book is for you! Click the cover image below to buy a digital copy or pre-order a hard copy (due out in September).”

aqualung cover

The second is a whimsical children’s book written by a young girl who decided she wanted all of the proceeds earned to go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. From the website: “The Moon Vs. The Sun is a story that pits the two members of the solar system against each other, but also gives kids a chance to learn a little about the two in the process. It’s combination of bright artwork and playful story that gives readers an interesting story and a powerful lesson about understanding others.” Click on the image below to purchase your digital copy and help an amazingly worthwhile cause in the process.

Thanks folks and enjoy the (comics filled) weekend!

Spring cleaning!

Howdy folks! Hope everyone is well. Been a little over a month since I’ve updated so I wanted to give a good overview of what the haps are currently. Recently my grandfather who I was very close with passed away which understandably put me a bit behind. Rest assured there is a lot going on and in the works!

First off is the creator owned project from my good buddy and writer extraordinaire C.W. Cooke and I which we hope to have out and in your hot little hands just as soon as humanly possible. Of course, we’ll be looking for a publisher so if there’s any out there in internet land reading and interested in an original OGN series that will knock your bobby sox off feel free to holler. Other wise we have a few in mind. This little beauty debuted at Planet Comic-Con a few weeks ago:

Postcard_Vertical front

If there is any interest in an additional run of these collectors postcards being printed feel free to let me know via email address provided on the contact page.

I’ve also recently resurrected a creator-owned book I began writing and drawing a few years back which stopped abruptly. I’m not sure exactly why as it’s a pretty groovy idea. Recently I found an amazing colorist in Dee Cunniffe (DC, Marvel, IDW, Archaia) and production began again. As not to divulge too much I will state only that it is a book about the never-ending battle against supernatural forces from taking over our world. Here’s a sample page with colors by Dee:

Dee_test_02_web

Aside from that I am still at work on “Don’t Mess with Texas” for I’m A Geek Entertainment and a bio-comic for Bluewater Productions as well as a project which is being developed to pitch as an animated series, however I can’t share anything about that property. Well, not yet anyway…

Hope everyone’s having a great Earth Day!
